Words from the Head of Department
The Department of Music was one of the liberal arts departments that became offshoots of the defunct Institute of African Studies in the 1970s. The Department was established in 1976, had its first set of students in 1979 and its first set of graduates in 1982. It has, since inception, remained one of the principal players in achieving the dreams and aspirations of the founding fathers of the University, most especially in the areas of learning and culture. Besides, it is one of the foremost Departments of Music among others in Africa.
The Department of Music anchors qualitative delivery of services in three fundamental areas in terms of teaching, research and service for which a University is known and recognized. Though a growing department, its responsibilities and services to the immediate and remote societies cannot be overemphasized. Since its inception the Department had supplied and had continue to supply well qualified music graduates to meet the various demands of Institutions of Learning both within and outside the country, music industries, Radio and Television media, Ministries of Education, Cultural Affairs and Tourism, Armed and Para-military Forces, Social Organizations and the general public. Its current academic staff is twelve (12) in number.
The academic programmes in the Department are categorized into undergraduate and postgraduate levels:
The Department of Music primarily trains students at the undergraduate level for the award of the following Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees and sub-degree: Music Performance, Music Composition, Musicology, Religious Music, Music Production & Management, Music Education, Popular Music/Gospel/Jazz, Music Technology. Other recent and new areas of specialization include Music Therapy/ Medical Musicology and Ecomusicology/ Environmental Musicology. The Department is very much open to collaborations and exchange programs. We therefore look forward to both local and global collaborations and exchange programs of both staff members and students.
