- CONTRIBUTION TO KNOWLEDGE
I have contributed to existing body of knowledge on African music theory and Church music scholarship through research into the study of harmony as observed in indigenous Ekiti Church Music and how it could be adapted in contemporary African Art music theory. The adaptation of Ekiti indigenous harmony to the contemporary theory and practice provides a creative forum different from the conventional formats.
In the area of popular music, I have published different articles on different aspects of Yoruba urban popular musical genres such as Juju and highlife. I critically examined the unique style of Isaiah Kehinde Dairo (I.K. Dairo) and his contributions to the growth of the Juju music genre in Nigeria. Also, I have investigated the nexus between secular and spiritual elements in the performance practice of I.K. Dairo’s brand of Juju and their corresponding effect on his musicality. In the same vein, the role music plays in the entrenchment of democratic governance and awareness in Nigeria was explored. Furthermore, in the area of urban popular music, the re-assessment of moral values in contemporary hip-hop music and entertainment was undertaken. Publications in these aspects of popular music include the following: 3(iii), (iv), (v), (vi) as listed in this Curriculum Vitae.
In addition, I have also researched into the musicological study of the life and works of seasoned musicologists in the Nigerian art music scene. The probe into the kernel of the musical career of Dan Agu – a seasoned musicologist – revealed a transformative aura based on his Christian belief and personality and the ability to infuse these qualities on upcoming academics in the field. Likewise, I undertook a musicological analysis of a 19-track album in which the effectiveness of music as a veritable tool of prayer was highlighted. The publication in this aspect of Musicology include the following: 3(i), (ii) in this Curriculum Vitae.
My publications in the field of Sacred musicology deals with choral music traditions within the Church. I inquired into the problems encountered at different levels by Church musicians as regards ‘Choral organ accompaniment. More so, I have investigated into the various ways through which effective choral directing could be attained in the church. Publications in this aspect of church music include: 3(vii), (viii) of this Curriculum Vitae.
